BFA Senior Thesis Capturing Light Through Abstraction

Quick moments in time. If we linger just a second longer, they vanish. The beauty of these moments is that they do vanish. Painting becomes a way to hold what cannot be held, a moment suspended, where light reveals the movement and passage of time.

A light-filled sky, shadows morphing into webs of speckled light, the sun glimmering on creek water. Capturing these ever-magical moments is at the very core of my practice. Each piece captures a very specific time and place, moments in which we feel the ecstasy of living.

Working on a large scale forces me to use my whole body to create the work. When I paint, my mind moves through the paintbrush. Reaching, pushing, pulling, squeezing, and splattering paint allows me to become fully immersed. The surface records this physical exchange, holding the labor and energy of its making.

In a similar manner to impressionist painters, I capture light and how it affects the natural world. Through layers of irregular mark-making, I abstract the natural world into lights and darks. This layered process creates depth, allowing light to become the focal point. In this way, each work becomes an attempt to capture a fleeting moment.

Taking the time to notice these moments is what makes life special, and without a clear narrative, viewers are encouraged to slow down, to notice, and to inhabit the shifting atmospheres within each piece. Absorbing each moment as it is: immediate, vibrant, and light-filled.
